Summer Mission Opportunities

Youth Summer Volunteer, Mission, and Outreach Opportunities

"and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave;  just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." --Matthew 20:27-28

We are called to serve, and we are happy to offer our students opportunities to serve others over the summer. Join us for one of these opportunities to break down barriers and love our neighbors:

Christ Church Vacation Bible School Teen Helper

June 22-25, 2020
Everyone loves Vacation Bible School. We are always thrilled to engage our teenagers as teen helpers during the week to assist with crafts, games, music, and other activities. Middle and High School students are asked to commit to being present all four days from 8:30 AM - 12:15 PM. Teen Helper registration is available here.

Christ Church Freedom School Teen Board

June 22-July 30, 2020
The Christ Church Freedom School Teen Board is open to rising sophomores, through college freshmen. In conjunction with Servant Leader Interns from Freedom school, the fifteen Teen Board members will work with Freedom School scholars ranging from 1st - 5th grade. This work will focus on boosting scholars’ literacy skills and exposing them to enriching cultural experiences.

Summer Teen Board members will commit to working as classroom assistants for two successive weeks from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday. Opportunities will include working in classrooms, accompanying teachers and students on field trips, planning activities, securing and delivering supplies, and other assistance as needed. Building relationships with students will be a key component of the experience.

In addition to serving as program assistants, the Summer Board members will commit to attend one orientation and training meeting. This training will include exploring values of social justice, learning about the challenges of urban education and poverty in Charlotte, developing leadership and organizing skills, learning about the Freedom School literacy and science curriculum, and participating in Christ Church Freedom School volunteer orientation.

Youth Costa Rica Trip

We invite high school students to join us as we engage in true relationship building with our Costa Rican brothers and sisters. We will spend a majority of our time at the Altura Hotel near the Poas Volcano learning how to be in relationship together as we participate in a youth retreat like no other. We will combine efforts with youth from the Diocese of Costa Rica to learn from and grow with one another. Get ready for a new kind of spiritual awakening!

We will not be taking a group to Costa Rica this July due to COVID-19, but we plan to offer this trip in July 2021. We hope your child will join us! Confidential scholarship assistance is available.

HUGS (Helping Understand God through Sharing)

July 10-18, 2020
HUGS is about shared experiences: Campers with special needs are paired with one or more “helper” campers, who assist the special-needs campers with all the activities of camp life. Needs may range from needing assistance in bathing, eating and/or dressing to help getting around or just having a friend to encourage participation. Helper campers take part in a day of training with counselors and nurses to learn how to care for the campers.

Through out the week, the campers live, play, and sing together. Camp is held at The Summit in Haw River State Park. The Camp family stays in the cabins and activities are in gym/pool area, the lodge, youth facility, and games on the recreation field. Come join in a camp where diversities are celebrated and understood!

High School students are invited to be Helper Campers and should apply by April 15. Download the application here: https://www.dionc.org/digital_faith/events/3179924.
