Click here for the latest news. The grounds are tidy, the architecture is non-descript. To the traffic whizzing by, there’s absolutely nothing to call attention to the heartbreak - and hope – inside Rama Road Elementary School. Located just four miles and yet a world away from Christ Church, more than 80%of the student population lives in poverty. To look at their tender faces, it is unthinkable that a single child here would ever be malnourished, marginalized, forgotten. But statistically, there’s not a rosy outlook: approximately 2500 students drop out of CMS annually and hundreds are incarcerated. Then adulthood and the cycle of distress continues for yet another generation.
Unless we summon the kindness and generosity and grace to bring about lasting change, beginning at the beginning. Beginning at Rama Road Elementary School. And so Christ Church has taken a stand. We are going to envelop this place – and its people –with the love Christ taught us to give. There’s a marvelous principal in place named Patty Denny, a staff that gives its all and families who care. Volunteer needs range from pencils and pats on the back to a single major project or long-term, weekly commitment to a particular child, class room or family. Christ Church will underwrite the salary of an onsite Communities In Schools coordinator to manage the avalanche of support necessary to provide each student the shining possibility of a worthy future. Please note that in order to volunteer with students at CMS, a background check is required through their secure website (http://www.cms.k12.nc.us). You will need to provide your driver’s license number and your social security number in order to complete this background check. Thank you for your commitment to the Micah Initiative.
