Enrichment Activities
Creative Movement Three year old, four year old and kindergarten students learn through the art of dance. This program helps children develop gross motor skills, listening ears, gentle hands, imagination and a warm heart, all through creative play and exercise. Literature, props, poetry and seasonal themes are the focus of fun and age appropriate movement lessons. As children learn to move and move to learn, emphasis is placed on sharing space, self-control, balance, core strength, listening, following directions, problem solving, higher level thinking, patterns and sequencing.
Music Make a joyful noise unto The Lord! Wouldn't everyone love to begin their class with "shake a friend's hand, rub a friend's back, and smile at a friend"? I love watching your children as they do this. It warms all of our hearts. Julie Armistead has taught at CCK children since her children were here. She travels to the classes with her guitar, J.T.
We have a weekly music classes in the 3's, 4's, and 5's for 30 minutes. Our overall goal is to make music fun with silly songs and lots of movements. It is amazing how many different songs and words your children can learn and remember.
Developmentally, they change a good deal from the first of the school year. After New Year's we begin to use clapping patterns. We also incorporate a bit of sign language and and the famous "Beaver Song" is introduced!
Science Three year old, four year old and kindergarten students attend the Science Lab twice a month at Christ Church Kindergarten. In the Science Lab, they enjoy learning about the wonderful world of science and nature through demonstrations, stories and hands-on activities. All areas of a child’s development – social, emotional, physical, and creativity- will benefit from science experiences. They will get an excellent foundation for later understanding of scientific concepts and they have fun doing it. Science Process Skills that will be used are observation, classification, questioning, predicting, experimenting and communicating.
Learning Center The Learning Center at CCK is filled with books, puzzles, audio-visual resources, posters, puppets, and manipulatives of all types. These resources are available for the teachers to use in their classrooms, thus providing a wide variety of experiences for the children.
Each of the 3’s, 4’s, and 5’s classes come to the Learning Center for 30 minutes twice a month, depending on the school calendar. We teach facts about a subject, read a fiction story, and lead a related activity. The children learn literary terms such as author, illustrator, fiction, non-fiction, etc. They also choose their own books to check out and keep in their classrooms until their next visit. In the Spring, the Toddlers and 2’s are introduced to the Learning Center for stories and activities.
CCK’s Fall Book Fair is run by the Learning Center. Thanks to the generosity of CCK parents, the school receives many new gift books, as well as proceeds which fund other new resources.
Christian Education The Christian Education program at Christ Church Kindergarten uses Godly Play as a creative way to teach the stories of the Bible to our three year old, four year old and kindergarten students. Before the story begins, the children are taught to be still and listen for God. We help them understand that getting ready is something only you can do; no one can help you get ready. After the story, the children are led into a time of wondering. Wondering is a huge piece of the Godly Play puzzle. This allows the children to connect to the stories and apply them to their lives. We will usually lead wondering questions like, "I wonder where you are in the story..." and "I wonder what your favorite part is..." to get the children actively thinking about the story.
At the beginning of the school year, the first story is an introduction to the church calendar, which determines which stories are used throughout the year. The children learn quickly what church season we are currently in and what stories we will talk about. Our goal is to help the children recognize that the Bible is a continuous story and not made up of bit and pieces of stories that have no relation. It is a packed year, but filled with fun and adventure as we get to know more people and events in the Bible and how they relate to our current lives.
Chapel The four year old and kindergarten students participate in a chapel service every other week. The children enjoy the formality of a small, formal church service, officiated by a member of the Christ Church clergy. In addition to singing songs, the students listen to a bible story and have an opportunity to ask the Christ Church clergy member questions pertaining to the bible and the lesson they learn that week.
