Christ Church serves with many agencies who tackle housing issues, both temporary and permanent, including Charlotte Emergency Housing, Emergency Winter Shelter, Family Promise, Habitat for Humanity, Room in the Inn, Uptown Shelter, W.I.S.H. (Workforce Initiative for Supportive Housing), YWCA (Women in Transition), and YWCA (Families Together). Click to read about our housing partnerships in greater detail.

Charlotte Emergency Housing
Charlotte Emergency Housing offers transitional housing and supportive services including childcare to residents who would otherwise be homeless. Christ Church Outreach and Mission budget gave $6,500 in 2008.

Emergency Winter Shelter
During the winter of 1981, three homeless men in Charlotte died of exposure. This tragedy sparked the development of an Emergency Winter Shelter (EWS) to be open from December through March to house homeless men when all other community shelters were full. Christ Church teams of parishioners serve at the EWS each season. Christ Church gave $7,500 from Outreach and Mission budget in 2008.

Family Promise
Family Promise is an interfaith hospitality network in the Charlotte area that provides food, shelter, and support for families in need of shelter. This program utilizes existing community resources to address the needs of homeless families. Christ Church parishioners helped bring Family Promise to Charlotte. Christ Church Outreach and Mission operating budget gave $10,000 in 2008.

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is a people-to-people partnership drawing together individuals and communities to build decent, affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity is committed to the development and uplifting of people and communities, not only to the development of housing. Christ Church Outreach and Mission budget gave $48,000 and the Christ Church Foundation gave $12,000 in 2008 to build a home.

Room in the Inn
Christ Church provides hospitality, food and a temporary "home" to twelve homeless "Neighbors" screened through the Center for Urban Ministry each Sunday night, December through March. Teams of parishioners serve together with a trained steering committee member.

Uptown Shelter
Charlotte's only permanent year-round shelter for homeless men. Homeless adult men who are clean and sober and able to take care of their personal needs are eligible for admission. Christ Church Outreach and Mission budget gave $4,000 in 2008.

WISH (Workforce Initiative for Supportive Housing)
WISH is a faith-led permanent supportive housing solution whereby selected families are given a defined set of "steps" which can empower them from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Highly-screened working families selected for WISH receive intensive life-skills support from social workers, a connection to local faith groups (through volunteers called Hope Teams,) a monthly rent subsidy for an affordable apartment, transportation assistance, and other support systems. Christ Church pledged $100,000 over 3 years to support WISH in its formative year. In 2008, Outreach and Mission budget gave $35,000.

YWCA (Families Together)
Families Together is a transitional housing program for homeless families where participants have access to a myriad of services including childcare, counseling, job training and more. In 2008 Christ Church contributed $4,000 to the YWCA.

YWCA (Women in Transition Program)
The Women in Transition Program provides safe affordable housing with intensive support services to over 100 single women at risk of homelessness each year.
