Botswana

In January 2008 at the Diocesan Convention, The Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, Bishop of North Carolina and The Rt. Rev. Trevor Mwamba, Bishop of Botswana, signed a formal agreement to establish a companion relationship between the Diocese of North Carolina and the Diocese of Botswana.

In the summer of 2008, The Rev. Murdock Smith, St. Martin's Charlotte, along with his wife and daughter, spent three weeks in Botswana. During the trip, Father Smith was joined by Lisa Towle, President of the Diocesan ECW and Canon Michael Hunn, Canon to the Ordinary for Program and Pastoral Ministry. Those who traveled to Botswana did so to begin to establish relationships and to explore the possibilities for furthering and deepening the companion relationship.

In March 2008, a team of five individuals from the Diocese traveled to Botswana to further explore and define the opportunities for our shared ministry. The primary areas of focus for our ministry together include HIV/AIDS care and ministries, including hospice; St. Paul's Orphanage in Molepolole; day care centers for orphans and vulnerable children; and Christian education and formation.

Another group went to Botswana in February of 2011. More details about this trip will be posted soon.
