Wednesday Night Classes, 7:00 - 8:00 PM (back to top)
February 8th

Religion and Film
Location: M207/208
Leader: Celia Sinclair
If Jesus came back today he would not tell parables; he would direct films. At their best, movies are multi-layered, complex, and nuanced ways of speaking truths to us in 21st century America much as parables did for audiences in 1st century Palestine. Together on Wednesday nights we will examine clips from contemporary films covering a range of genres: comedy, drama, science fiction, fantasy. We will literally see how messages of redemption, forgiveness and mercy find their way into our theaters, our living rooms, and our hearts.

Faith and Work
Location: M205
Leader: Dorothy Trotter
The Christian Journey doesn’t stop when the church service ends. When the new work week begins, it is easy, to trudge through it without giving another thought to our faith. We will explore ways to bring Sunday into Monday, whether you work from home, work in a volunteer setting or head uptown every day.

Free Concert By The Sloan River Project Band
Location: All Saints' Hall
Sloan River Project featuring our Youth Minister Drew Courtright is coming to Christ Church! They will play on Wednesday, February 8th from 6:30 - 8:00 PM in All Saints Hall. Bring the whole family!

February 1st

Tomorrow is Groundhog Day, when the media overexposes a quaint tradition of seeing if a poor, caged groundhog will stay out of his cage because it is cloudy or if he will retreat on seeing his shadow in the sunlight. I doubt his decision has much to do with the weather and more with the ridiculously large crowd that gathers to watch and photograph his decision.

Decisions are the focus of the "other" Groundhog Day, the movie in which Bill Murray plays a cantankerous weatherman who goes to cover the February 2nd event and finds himself in a time warp, reliving the day over and over, with infinite possibilities for the day's outcome. He makes stupid choices, self-serving choices, evil choices, and eventually good ones that catapult him out of the time warp with a new vision on reality.

This perspective makes every day Groundhog Day for Christians in that each day presents us with new possibilities and choices and we have the freedom to do as we wish. Every time our decisions are good, there is rejoicing in heaven. Every time our decisions are bad, there is the call to repent and start again. To use golf language, there are no gimmes from God, but there are infinite mulligans from God.

This is the day the Lord has made. What will you choose to do?
