Outreach Opportunities in Housing & Hunger
Habitat for Humanity: Christ Church is excited to build its 20th home. construction begins March 13. No experience necessary! Please download the sign-up sheet on the left or contact Carrington Coulter at carrington.coulter@morgankeegan.com. Works to develop community with people in need by building and renovating homes. Christ Church helped to bring Habitat to Charlotte and has built over 16 homes. Ministry opportunities include working on-site for one or multiple days, providing lunch or snacks (please contact Jennifer Grainger at 704-332-9135), and designing/providing landscaping of home.
Young Adults Habitat Day is coming.....You asked for it, you got it! In response to numerous requests, we are creating a Young Adults Habitat date - mark your calendars for Saturday, April 5, 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. We are hoping for a large turnout as Christ Church has been asked to build the 1st 2-story house for Habitat in Charlotte (by a faith community). We will be putting on siding and will needs lots of working hands. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in our community - and get to know folks at Christ Church! Bring your friends or co-workers and join us for Young Adults Habitat Day! Must be 18 years or older to work on site (ages 16 & 17 can work if accompanied by an adult). WISH (Workforce Initiative Supportive Housing) Hope Teams: Christ Church has three Hope Teams connected to families. Teams of 8-10 parishioners share responsibilities of caring for and interacting with homeless families who are ready to move into housing. Team members may assist with budgeting, tutoring, sprucing up their home, and sharing their friendship and hospitality. Charlotte Emergency Housing: Offers temporary shelter, childcare and hope for homeless families. Ministry opportunities include organizing activities for families (both on or off site), cleaning/painting, helping residents move, putting together welcome baskets for new residents, ground maintenance or tutoring children or adults.
Crisis Assistance: Provides assistance and advocacy for people in financial crisis, helping them move towards self-sufficiency. Ministry opportunities include becoming a trained client interviewer, mentoring clients, distributing snacks/drinks to clients, adopting a day in the Home Essentials store, doing a furniture drive, or sorting clothing/household donations.
Emergency Winter Shelter: Provides food and a warm place for men to stay during winter months (Nov-March). Christ Church hosts two nights, (one Thursday and one Friday night per month) from 6-7:30 p.m. Teams of 4-7 people serve dinner, pass out blankets, and assist with check-in. Christ Church dates for the rest of the year are: 11/9, 11/15, 12/14 and 12/20. In 2008, our dates are: 1/17, 2/8, 2/21, 3/14, 3/20, 4/11 and 4/17. Friendship Trays: Delivers meals daily to individuals who are unable to obtain or prepare their own meals. Ministry opportunities include working on-site to help with preparation of meals or drivers to deliver meals.
Loaves and Fishes: Charlotte’s largest network of emergency food pantries who provides groceries and support to people in crisis. Ministry opportunities include conducting food drives, sorting canned goods and
Interfaith Hospitality Network (Family Promise): Seeks to provide shelter, meals and support services to homeless families through a network of churches or other organizations being the “home” for the families. Ministry opportunities include providing meals, providing fellowship, tutoring of adults/children, providing weekend activities for guests or spending the night at Christ Church during one of nights that we host our Neighbors. Room in the Inn: Provides shelter, meals and love to homeless Neighbors (both individual or family) during the winter months at area churches. We will be hosting homeless Neighbors through Room in the Inn each Sunday night from December through March. Many able-bodied hands will be needed to host all of those nights... what a great Christmas gift to give your family by sharing your time with those less fortunate! We need people to provide meals, spend the night, serve breakfast, purchase gifts and spread Christmas joy to all of the Neighbors who will be spending the night with us through the winter months. Society of St. Andrews (Gleaning Network): Throughout the year various “gleaning” opportunities are available. Very family friendly opportunity to go into the fields and help select fruits and vegetables not taken by the grocery stores to be sent to food pantries and other organizations.
Summit House: Strives to break the multigenerational cycle of crime, poverty, and substance abuse by intervening and strengthening lives of non-violent female offenders and their children. Ministry opportunities include facility maintenance, mentoring and tutoring adults.
