Journey to Adulthood

2006 Urban Adventure

The Journey to Adulthood program began at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church in Durham, N.C. over 15 years ago and was developed by David Crean and Amanda Hughes.  This is a six year program that is divided into 3 two-year components.  Christ Church uses this program for our 7th-12th grade program.           7th and 8th grade Rite-13 (a name based on a liturgical celebration integral to the program) celebrates the gift of manhood and womanhood and provides a foundation for the remainder of the program.

9th and 10th grade J2A (Journey to Adulthood) builds on Rite-13 by training young people in six necessary skills of adulthood:  Listening, Assertion, Negotiation, Research,  Information Management, Partnership and Leadership.

11th and 12th grade YAC (Young Adults in the Church) builds on the previous years of the program by enabling the young people to practice their newly-acquired skills in the context of the parish community.

Journey to Adulthood is a holistic curriculum that tries to deal with what is real for young people.  It honors their questions, assures them they are valuable people with valuable experiences and provides a scriptural, spiritual, and liturgical frame for their stage of life right now.  Each segment of the program works on common aspects of the development of the person as a whole.  Self, Society, Sexuality, and Spirituality are studied in depth in hopes that the lives of the youth will be strengthened, encouraged, healed, and empowered by the life and wisdom of Jesus Christ.

The Journey to Adulthood promise:
If you seek the Christ, together we will find him.
