Exciting News! Welcome Connor Gwin and Family

May 14, 2020

    Dear Friends,
I am very pleased to announce that The Reverend Connor Gwin will be joining our clergy and staff team as Associate Rector for Family Ministry. Connor will work with Joshua Case to strengthen our ministries with children, youth, and families, and will also work with young adults as Patty Rhyne prepares to begin retirement.

Connor most recently served as the Chaplain at Stuart Hall School, an Episcopal day and boarding school (pre-K - 12) in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Prior to his work at Stuart Hall, he served as the Canon for Social Engagement and Christian Formation in the Diocese of Southwestern Virginia. Throughout his ministry, Connor has focused on translating our faith tradition for the modern world. He has a passion for equipping families, forming disciples, and proclaiming the Good News of God's grace.

Raised on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, Connor was "all in" at his local church from an early age, from serving as an acolyte to singing in the children's choir to participating in youth group mission trips. Episcopal summer camps hold a special place in his story and he counts Camp Beckwith (Fairhope, Alabama), Shrine Mont (Orkney Springs, Virginia), and Kanuga (Hendersonville, North Carolina) as "thin places" on his journey.

Connor discerned a call to the priesthood while attending James Madison University, and attended Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria upon graduation. While in seminary he served at the parish of St. Anne's, Reston.

During college, Connor met his wife, Emma. It was her first Sunday singing in the local Episcopal church choir, and Connor was in love by the end of the processional hymn. They were married in the Chapel of the Transfiguration at Kanuga. They have an almost-two-year-old daughter, Harper Jane, who loves nothing more than a bowl full of pretzel sticks and "Frozen Two" on the television.

Connor writes regularly for Mockingbird, an online and print publication that connects the Christian faith to everyday life. He also enjoys reading and writing poetry, playing guitar, and taking family walks around the neighborhood.

Please join me in thanking the Associate Rector Search Committee: Bill Lorenz (Chair), Burch Mixon, Amelia Abbott, Laura Copps, Ann Tabor, Tere Ey, Sally Mitchener, and Jane Showalter. This group faithfully rose to the challenge of conducting a thorough and effective search via virtual means these last two months.

Stay tuned for information about plans to welcome Connor and his family in July.

    Faithfully,
    Chip
