All-Church Read July 2020:
Waking Up White, and Finding Myself in the Story of Race, by Debbie Irving
Small Groups Meet:
Tuesday, July 7, 14, 21, from 10:30 - 11:30 AM
Thursday, July 9, 16, 23, from 6:30 - 7:30 PM
The author writes, "Waking Up White is the book I wish someone had handed me years ago. My hope is that by sharing my sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions, I offer a fresh perspective on bias, stereotypes, manners, and tolerance. As I unpack my own long-held beliefs about colorblindness, being a good person, and wanting to help people of color, I reveal how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated my ill-conceived ideas about race.”
During the month of July, we invite you to read the book along with others at Christ Church. You might finish it in one sitting, or you can digest it slowly, inviting each chapter to settle into you. It is up to you!
After you register, you will receive a reading guide (via email) during the first week of July. In addition, Jenny Beaumont, The Reverend Joan Kilian, and Laura Konitzer will lead two small discussion groups (via Zoom) on Tuesday, July 7, 14, 21, from 10:30 - 11:30 AM, and Thursday, July 9, 16, 23, from 6:30 - 7:30 PM. If you register for a group, you will receive a Zoom link and password via email.
